Beaming in Gamma-ray Bursts: Evidence for a Standard Energy Reservoir
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present a comprehensive sample of all gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows with known distances, and we derive their conical opening angles based on observed broadband breaks in their light curves. Within the framework of this conical jet model, we correct for the geometry and we find that the gamma-ray energy release is narrowly clustered around ergs. We draw three conclusions. First, the central engines of GRBs release energies 50 5 # 10 that are comparable to ordinary supernovae. Second, the broad distribution in fluence and luminosity for GRBs is largely the result of a wide variation of opening angles. Third, only a small fraction of GRBs are visible to a given observer, and the true GRB rate is several hundred times larger than the observed rate. Gamma-ray Burst Beaming: a Universal Configuration with a Standard Energy Reservoir?
We consider a gamma-ray burst (GRB) model based on an anisotropic fireball with an axisymmetric energy distribution of the form ǫ(θ) ∝ θ, and allow for the observer’s viewing direction being at an arbitrary angle θv with respect to the jet axis. This model can reproduce the key features expected from the conventional on-axis uniform jet models, with the novelty that the achromatic break time in...
متن کاملEmission lines in GRBs constrain the total energy reservoir
The emission features observed in the X–ray afterglow of Gamma Ray Bursts are extremely powerful. Since they last at least for several hours, they imply energies of the order of 10 ergs. This in turn implies that the energy contained in the illuminating continuum thought to be responsible of the line production must exceed 10 ergs. This is a strong lower limit to the energy reservoir of Gamma R...
متن کاملAre Gamma-Ray Bursts a Standard Energy Reservoir?
One of the most important discoveries in the observation of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is that the total energy emitted by a GRB in γ-rays has a very narrow distribution around 1051 erg, which has led people to claim that GRBs are standard energy explosions. As people made the claim they have ignored the selection biases which must be important since GRB observations are strongly fluence or flux-l...
متن کاملThe Dynamics and Light Curves of Beamed Gamma Ray Burst Afterglows
The energy requirements of gamma ray bursts have in past been poorly constrained because of three major uncertainties: The distances to bursts, the degree of burst beaming, and the efficiency of gamma ray production. The first of these has been resolved, with both indirect evidence (the distribution of bursts in flux and position) and direct evidence (redshifted absorption features in the after...
متن کامل“No High Energy Emission” GRB Class Is Attributable to Brightness Bias
The inhomogeneous brightness distribution of BATSE detected gamma-ray bursts has been considered strong evidence for their cosmological origin. However, subclasses of gamma-ray bursts have been shown to have significantly more homogeneous brightness distributions. Pendleton et al. (1997) have found such a result for gamma-ray bursts with no detectable emission at energies >300 keV. Accordingly,...
